Prayer Ministries

There is power in prayer. Psalms 107: 28 says, “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.” In Matthew 21:22 Jesus said, “And whatever you ask for in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” We believe that we have a God who hears our prayers and because of that, we have made prayer and primary piece of our ministry.

There are seven major spheres of influence in our culture today. These spheres are Government, Arts and Entertainment, Media, Family, Religion, Business and Education. When short-term teams come to our city, we start off their outreach with a trip to downtown Houston to pray over these seven spheres. Prior to our prayer walks we spend time on the 60th floor of the Chase Tower for a panoramic view of the size and scope of Houston. Prayer comes alive as we intercede by local icons such as our city hall, courthouse and theaters.

Houston has become the hub for human trafficking in the United States. An estimated 18,000 victims of sex trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Texas is “home” to 25% of these international victims, with the majority of these being brought into our own city of Houston. This does not include the estimated 200,000-600,000 men, women, and children who are domestic victims of trafficking. These individuals are often raped multiple times, forced into addictions to be better controlled, then sold repeatedly on a daily basis. The abuse is as much mental as physical, and many of the victims, after years in the trade, will return to their handlers voluntarily due to intense brainwashing.

There is an estimated 200+ brothels in Houston and 120 of these are known locations to the police, local public, and Houston trafficking ministries. These locations take on the form of cantinas, spas, modeling studios, adult galleries, strip clubs and private establishments with their prime advertising taking place on the internet. Specific websites are dedicated to the advertisement, review, and sale of humans being trafficked.

YWAM Houston regularly takes staff and short-term teams to known brothels nearby to pray for freedom over these girls and captors. This trade is not welcome in our city and we will continue to intercede for those who are imprisoned. As Isaiah 1:16 states, we must “Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed.”

In May, 2010 Planned Parenthood opened their largest clinic in the United States right here in Houston. Planned Parenthood is currently the world’s largest abortion provider. In 2008 approximately 1.21 million abortions took place in the United States. From 1973 through 2008, nearly 50 million legal abortions have occurred in the U.S. alone. In 2008 Texas was among the top five states for the highest number of reported abortions at 81,366. (AGI/CDC)

We believe it is self-evident that an unborn child is an intrinsically valuable person. Proverbs 31:8-9 commands us to, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.” YWAM Houston is called to show love towards the unborn children of our city and the mothers and fathers who are struggling with their pregnancy. Every week we gather as YWAM Houston staff or with our short-term teams to stand and pray peacefully in front of Planned Parenthood for the lives of the unborn.
